Statement from Doctors For St. Vincent’s Hospital:

April 10, 2010

NEW YORK, April 10 /PRNewswire/ — The doctors of St. Vincent’s Hospital join together in alliance with local members of the New York State Nurses Association to take a stand against the closing of this essential 160-year-old medical institution, and call for the prompt reversal of this action. Representing the one thousand medical practitioners tied to this institution, we are alarmed at the risk to the health and safety of our patients, and the entire lower West Side community. We question the wisdom, safety and honesty with which this action has been taken. We call on Governor Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines to place an immediate hold on any further action until a full study can be made of the reasons, method and integrity with which this action has been pursued. Further, we express our heartfelt commitment to this community which many of us have served for as many as thirty years or more, and our promise to do all we can to continue to protect, treat and heal until we are no longer able to do so.
