Patient Care Technology Systems Acquires nuMedica Emergency Department Paper Charting Division

Posted on: Wednesday, 27 July 2005, 09:00 CDT

Medical Software Provider Expands Line of Charting Solutions for Emergency Departments

Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS), a medical software subsidiary of Consulier Engineering Inc. (NASDAQ:CSLR), announced today that they have completed the acquisition of the paper charting division of Golden, Colorado-based nuMedica Inc. (www.numedica.com) for an undisclosed cash amount. nuMedica is a provider of documentation solutions for emergency departments.

Previously marketed by nuMedica under the branding, formED, the bedside physician documentation system consists of approximately 100 complaint or procedure-specific physician chart templates developed by board-certified ED physicians and experts in billing, coding, and risk management. The paper templates use a consistent layout and are customizable to individual ED requirements and feature pre-written discharge instructions and prescription writer. The templates are designed to ease ED pressures by saving physicians time, lowering documentation costs, generating more robust and compliant documentation of the patient visit, and increasing billing revenue and reimbursement. FormED is the first template system to have an academic review board editing its content.

"It was important for nuMedica to find the right home for our paper charting division," said Peter Hudson, MD, president of nuMedica. "PCTS impressed our board and me with their track record of growth and their focus on becoming a premier provider of communication and workflow solutions to emergency departments and high acuity specialties."

This is the second acquisition by PCTS, (www.pcts.com), within the past 8 months following the December acquisition of Healthcare I.T. Inc., the leading provider of passive tracking software in U.S. emergency departments, in December 2004. "I am very pleased to integrate the paper charting business of nuMedica into the PCTS portfolio," said Tony Marsico, CEO and president of PCTS. "Paper charting based on chief complaint templates represents the charting method of approximately a third of all emergency departments in the United States.

"As hospitals evaluate their migration to electronic medical records, we see a strong opportunity to serve the ED segment who chart with paper templates with a more user-configurable and affordable option. PCTS now offers an even broader portfolio of solutions that will support emergency departments in all stages of adoption of computer-based tracking and charting."
