Morria Biopharmaceuticals Announces Promising Asthma Pre-Clinical Results for Treatment of Asthma
Posted on: Wednesday, 27 July 2005, 12:00 CDT
Morria Biopharmaceuticals Plc., a biopharmaceutical company focusing on novel, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, announced today that its leading inhaled drug candidate (termed MRX3) markedly ameliorated asthma symptoms and reduced the levels of several key inflammatory mediators in pre-clinical trials in animals. The results of these studies, conducted by Professor Saul Yedgar of the Hebrew University and his collaborators, appear in the current issue of Thorax.
In the study, rats with ovalbumin-induced asthma were pre-treated with inhaled MRX3 to test for the drug's efficacy as an asthma preventative therapy. MRX3 was compared to a placebo as well as a standard steroid (dexamethosone). The results show that MRX3 inhalation markedly ameliorated airway-constriction and airway inflammation and suppressed levels of the key inflammatory mediator associated with asthma: cysteinyl-leukotrienes, TNF-alpha and nitric oxide in lung macrophages. Furthermore, the drug had promising efficacy even when given after the asthma attack had already commenced, indicating a possible "reliever" function as well as a "preventer" function.
"This looks like a promising new approach" said Professor Peter J. Barnes of Imperial College in London, an advisor to Morria its asthma development program.
"This is yet another promising indication of the considerable potential of our drug technology in treating chronic inflammatory diseases and replacing current therapies, particularly corticosteroids" said Dr. Yuval Cohen, Managing Director of Morria Biopharmaceuticals. "Our strategic goal is to initiate clinical trials in patients as soon as possible while continuing our synergistic efforts with our other leading products in the fields of dermatology and gastro-intestinal inflammation."
