Rocking a Healthy Diet Helps Fight Kidney Stones

(Ivanhoe Newswire) ““ Kidney stones are sneaky things, they come out of nowhere and blindside you, but this study shows that by eating a diet to prevent high blood pressure, kidney stones can also be prevented.

Certain key ingredients of a low blood pressure diet ward off kidney stones. These magical ingredients that are very important in the fight against the formation of kidney stones are low-fat dairy products and plants. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, is very high in fruits, veggies, nuts, legumes, dairy products, and whole grains, and is low in sweetened beverages and red meat.

Researchers studied 24- hour urine samples of 3,426 participants with and without a history of kidney stones. The people who followed the DASH diet secreted more urine than those who did not, despite similar fluid intake. The researchers believed this to be because of the higher water content in foods eaten in the DASH diet. The individuals on the DASH diet secreted more citrate in their urine, which is a calcium stone inhibitor. Finally, the study showed that there may be other helpful ingredients in low-fat dairy and plants that are helping to stop kidney stones.

It is always important to live a healthy lifestyle, but this study shows that by following a low blood pressure diet, in particular the DASH diet, there can be very beneficial causes, including preventing painful kidney stones.
