Tribute to Breast Cancer Sufferers

Posted on: Monday, 1 August 2005, 00:00 CDT

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun. - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi

tonight paid tribute to breast cancer patients at a charity dinner to

raise public awareness on the disease in Malaysia.

The "Walk With Pride" fashion show-cum-dinner was organised by Pink

Ribbon Deeds (Pride), an organisation set up to help people with cancer

and improve the standards of diagnosis, treatment and care of breast

cancer patients in Malaysia.

The patron of Pride and Yayasan Budi Penyayang, Datin Seri Endon

Mahmood, the Prime Minister's wife, said the two organisations would

always support cancer patients who undergo treatment.

Her speech was read by Abdullah, who jokingly said this was the first

time that a Prime Minister was reading someone else's speech.

Endon, a breast cancer sufferer, could not attend the event as she is

undergoing follow-up treatment in Los Angeles.

Abdullah said Endon would not allow him to visit her in Los Angeles

after the Umno general assembly earlier this month as planned because she

wanted him to speak on her behalf at the function.

Endon said she was saddened that she could not be with the survivors to

celebrate their triumph in battling the disease.

"I know first hand of the courage, stamina and strength required to

undergo treatment and to cope with numerous challenges one faces

physically, emotionally and mentally.

"As I go through my treatment in Los Angeles, my thoughts, feelings and

empathy are with women afflicted with breast cancer.

"I am convinced that a positive mind and correct attitude will help see

us through," she said.

Earlier, guests were treated to a 25-minute fashion show modelled by 28

breast cancer survivors.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife

Datuk Seri Rosmah Mansor, ministers and several international celebrities

including actor Jackie Chan, the Pointer Sisters and the Platters.
