Trupanion Aims to Help “˜Wash’ Away Canine Cancer

November 16, 2010

Pet insurance company Trupanion announces partnership with the National Canine Cancer Foundation.

Seattle, WA (Vocus) November 15, 2010

In honor of National Canine Cancer Awareness Month, pet insurance company Trupanion is partnering with the National Canine Cancer Foundation to support National Dog Wash, an event that raises money for canine cancer research.

Trupanion is proud to take part in such an important cause, and will make a $5 donation to the NCCF for any new policy established in November by National Dog Wash participants. Trupanion’s pet insurance policy covers expenses related to cancer, including diagnostic tests, chemotherapy, and medications.

The National Dog Wash started on November 1st and runs through November 30th. During this time, anyone who makes a $5 donation to the National Canine Cancer Foundation receives exclusive dog washing supplies shipped directly to their home. Participants are then asked to take photos of the products in action and upload those photos to the NCCF website. The intention is to engage people to “wash away canine cancer”. Proceeds from this month-long event will be used to fund important research grants that are used to develop innovative approaches to a cure, treatment, diagnosis, or prevention of cancers in dogs.

According to the NCCF, one in three dogs will be affected by cancer, and of those, half will die. Mast cell tumors are one of the most common cancers found on dogs and while any dog breed or mixed breed can be affected, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Pugs, and Shar Peis are more prone to them. Early detection is key to finding and treating cancer in dogs and the NCCF suggests that dog owners routinely examining their dogs for physical or behavioral abnormalities including abnormal swelling, lumps under armpits, sores that won’t heal, foul breath, weight loss, and difficulty breathing.
