Home-Test Screen for Bowel Cancer

HOME-testing kits for bowel cancer are to be sent out in a new screening programme.
The scheme - aimed at early detection and avoidance of embarrassing checks at the doctor's - will cover everyone aged 60 to 69 by 2009.
Kits will go out every two years to those eligible, who will return a sample to the lab for analysis.
The test can reduce bowel cancer deaths by 15 per cent. About 35,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the UK.
Outlining details yesterday, Health Minister Rosie Winterton said: "Of those who get the disease, 90 per cent survive if it is caught early. People can feel uncomfortable talking about it, let alone coping with the symptoms.
"That is why the privacy and dignity that the home-testing kits afford will help us better tackle the disease."
Screening will start next April, with about 25 per cent of Britain covered by the end of 2006-07.
The number will rise in stages until 2009. Cost for the first two years is pounds 37.5million.
