The Peoples Chemist Says “Vitamin D” Science Sloppy, Exposes Little-Known Dangers Lurking in Pills

The vitamin industry can’t be trusted. Consumer reports recently showed that many supplements are “contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs.” Shane Ellison, organic chemist and author of Over-The-Counter Natural Cures, exposes yet another danger lurking in our nutritional supplements: hormones known as cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol, commonly referred to as “vitamin D.”
Proponents of vitamin D insist that many Americans suffer from a “vitamin D” deficiency, thereby causing a myriad of illnesses from immune dysfunction, cancer, heart disease and “even a bad haircut.”
But, Ellison refutes this, saying that today’s blood levels are exacerbated, as recently confirmed in the report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). He explains that, optimal blood levels of vitamin D being promoted today are three times greater than the average levels recorded in the blood of healthy individuals who are regularly exposed to sun. Hence, the underlying message to raise our levels with pills to avoid a “deficiency” is profit driven. Rickets is also erroneously used to push vitamin D pills.
The “rickets rationale” purports that “vitamin D” cured the paralyzing disease, which is prima facie evidence of its healing qualities. Ellison tells us, it’s not true. The plethora of “sunshine hormones” (secosteroids) produced by the skin, and those found naturally in cod liver oil, cured rickets, not vitamin D pills made in the stinky labs of Big Pharma. “Purveyors of this myth have the Big Pharma marketing noose firmly around their neck, and probably don’t even know it,” said Ellison.
Overall, Ellison asserts that “vitamin D science is sloppy because it fails to distinguish between the benefits of sensible sun exposure and that of man-made vitamin D, taken orally. He explains that, “often times, the benefits of sunshine are incorrectly applied to the use of vitamin D pills in order to make them more appealing to consumers, while the side effects are overlooked.”
To warn consumers of the dangers lurking in vitamin D pills, Ellison has bestowed his controversial Stinky Sulfur Award to the nation’s leading vitamin D supporters at thepeopleschemist.com/blog.
