Consumers Turn to Custom Diets to Achieve Their Perfect Bodies for 2011

December 21, 2010

Consumers are turning to customized diets to lose weight for 2011 ““ the trend is clear in everything including new apps for iPhones, custom energy bars and recommendations from experts.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 20, 2010

It’s almost New Year’s Resolution time, and the hot trend for 2011 is clear: people are resolving to lose weight on custom diets.

In December, both myMediConnect and Kellogg’s Special K launched high-tech custom diet trackers. MyMediConnect allows users to create and monitor customized diet plans and workout routines online, while having access to a whole library of meal plans designed by professional nutritionists. Users can even get custom shopping lists on their iPhones.

Meanwhile, Kellogg’s “MyPlan ““ The Special K Challenge” iPhone and Android app offers users the ability to design their own custom weight loss plans, get diets tips and track their progress. Users who are looking for a diet community are encouraged to share their stories on Facebook.

Bestselling author Timothy Ferriss is also touting the benefits of custom nutrition this holiday season. In his new book (out on Dec, 14), “The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman,” Ferriss (who wrote New York Times Bestseller “The 4-Hour Work Week”) tells readers that customizing the human body means getting the right fuel for it.

To do this, Ferriss recommends YouBars.com, a custom energy bar company that allows people to custom design their own protein bars online. In addition to custom nutrition bars, You Bar also makes customized protein shakes, trail mixes and cereals fresh-to-order so that people can take complete control over their diets, even when they’re busy and on-the-go.

The trend for custom diets this new year tallies with an increasing body of science that shows that each individual has a different ideal diet because of genetic differences in things like metabolism and susceptibility to disease. This burgeoning field of “nutrigenomics” (short for “nutritional genomics”) has received increasing recognition over the last five years. Last month (November 2010), the Joint Irish Nutrigenomics Organization announced at the annual International Nutrigenomics conference in Spain that it had received 9 million euros worth of funding to research the connection between diet and genes.
