Bellbrook Labs in Madison said Thursday it has received a $1 million small business innovation research grant from the National Institute for General Medical Sciences to continue developing a screening test that would help researchers characterize how new drugs are metabolized before they enter clinical trials.

The company also said it has received a $180,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to begin developing a test that would help pharmaceutical companies more quickly develop new drugs with fewer side effects.

Bellbrook, founded in August 2002, develops screening tools to help researchers at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies discover therapies.
