HOUSTON, March 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Texas Children’s Hospital today announced the opening of West Campus, its first suburban hospital, located at I-10 and Barker Cypress in Houston, Texas. Designed, equipped and staffed exclusively for children, the 515,000 square-foot Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus offers both inpatient and outpatient services and is ideally located to serve one of the nation’s fastest growing pediatric populations—the area from Sugar Land to Bryan-College Station, Texas.

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is a part of the internationally-renowned hospital’s $1.5 billion expansion, Vision 2010, which also includes the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute(TM), the nation’s first multi-disciplinary research institute focused on childhood neurological disorders, and the Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, a comprehensive obstetrics facility focusing on high-risk births.

“”The opening of this new community hospital exemplifies Texas Children’s 50-year commitment to the health and well being of children and families by providing them with expanded access to the highest quality family-centered pediatric care,” said Mark A. Wallace, president and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital. “Our new community hospital complements the services we provide at our Main Campus in the Texas Medical Center and is a key component of our vision for the future.”

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus houses the only 24/7 pediatric emergency room in the Greater West Houston area, two operating rooms, 48 intermediate and acute-care patient beds, advanced imaging services including MRI and CT scans, a neurophysiology sleep lab, a pathology lab and a full-scale pharmacy. The attached outpatient clinic building, which opened in December 2010, offers 15 pediatric subspecialty practices ranging from physical/occupational and speech therapy to cardiology and oncology. A Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates primary care practice is also on site.

The new Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus incorporates evidence-based design principles throughout. Patient rooms have abundant natural light and views of water and nature. Other features include colorful child life play areas on every inpatient floor, whimsical children’s artwork displayed throughout, examination rooms that accommodate multiple family members, and an operation simulation room that helps reduce anxiety by letting young patients explore an upcoming procedure.

The $220-million facility is located on 55 acres with ample free parking and plenty of space for future expansion. With a current workforce of approximately 370 physicians, nurses and staff, Wallace noted that the majority of physicians staffing both inpatient and outpatient services have previously practiced at one or more Texas Children’s locations, helping to ensure a successful extension of Texas Children’s Hospital culture and standards to its new community hospital.

Designed by architecture firm PageSutherlandPage and built by Tellepsen Builders, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is one of the inaugural member institutions of the new Texas Medical Center – West Campus.
