New York Serves Up Fresh Tips to Teachers on Nutrition in the Classroom
NEW YORK, March 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — LanguageMate® has been invited by the Celebration of Teaching and Learning conference to host the event’s first ever Health and Wellness session. Organized by public television station WNET, the Celebration is one of the largest teacher’s conferences, bringing together more than 10,000 educators worldwide. Featured during the panel presentation will be tips on incorporating nutrition education in the classroom. Also highlighted will be The MiniMiti Adventures Teacher’s Toolkit, an innovative resource for pre-school and elementary school teachers aimed at imparting healthy eating habits to children. This demonstration will take place on March 19th from 2:30-3:45 PM at the Hilton New York in New York City.
In light of the growing obesity epidemic, health and nutrition education is a critical topic for classrooms around the country. The need for supporting teachers in this endeavor was clearly articulated in a recent post on the Celebration EdBlog, by LanguageMate® Founder and President, Bill Z. Tan — “Food Choices and Academic Performance: How can we enhance nutrition education in the classroom?”
“It’s a tremendous honor to present The MiniMiti Adventures at the Celebration conference. The organizers should be lauded for highlighting this enormously important topic,” says Tan. “We look forward to sharing our research with the teachers at the panel.”
Funded by an Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health, The MiniMiti Adventures is a bilingual educational TV series that helps young children and their caretakers learn about the many benefits of a balanced diet and develop communication skills to talk about healthy food options at the dinner table. The MiniMiti Adventures Teacher’s Toolkit is an expansion of the series, featuring an interactive DVD with nutrition education lesson plans, printable activities and adaptive assessment to bring this conversation into the classroom.
