Scott & White Cancer Researcher Signs Contract to Help Develop Drugs
Posted on: Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 15:00 CDT
Scott & White has signed a multi-year agreement with OncoTac, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, to provide research, development and testing at the Cancer Research Institute at Scott & White.
Scott & White is one of the largest multi-specialty clinics and hospital systems in the United States. Ongoing research and education activities at Scott & White include the recently established Cancer Research Institute (CRI). Heading the CRI as its director is Arthur E. Frankel, M.D., who is the principal investigator for the research and development of cancer treatment agents using recombinant toxins under this grant.
The agreement with OncoTac provides Scott & White with quantities of anti-cancer drugs extracted from a group of substances called peptidotoxins. When developed using the company's proprietary OncoMpact(TM) technology, these drugs selectively seek out cancer cells and attach to the cell's surface. Once attached, the agent activates a toxic reaction inside the cancer cell, stopping vital cell processes. From recent work it appears these drugs may be very effective in fighting the cancer while minimizing side effects to the patient.
"OncoTac provides the compounds our research and development work needs to bring cancer treatments from bench to bedside in a shorter period of time," said Dr. Frankel. "It is a very specialized area of pharmaceutical development, with quality and safety carrying a very high premium."
Typical compounds used for Dr. Frankel's work include nontoxic forms of diphtheria and anthrax.
