United Drugs Partners With CMS and Offers Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage Education

Posted on: Wednesday, 10 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

United Drugs is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help educate their patients who are among the eligible 6.4 million individuals with limited income and resources who may qualify for the extra help available as part of the new Medicare prescription drug coverage.

"United Drugs pharmacies are committed to providing their patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about the new prescription drug coverage," said Medicare expert Bruce Semingson, R.Ph., FACA, vice president of managed care sales at United Drugs. "To help prepare our pharmacies for Jan. 1, 2006, we've launched a comprehensive educational program designed to educate them about how the Medicare prescription drug coverage works and how to help their Medicare-eligible patients understand enrollment and what the benefit means to them."

United Drugs is coordinating several educational seminars and conferences in preparation for Oct. 1 -- when various prescription drug plans (PDPs) can begin to market and enroll people with Medicare. Additional efforts include providing pharmacies with in-store Medicare ask-for-help materials, general marketing collateral and enrollment application training assistance for pharmacy staff. All these items are intended to help pharmacists answer customer questions about the 2006 Medicare prescription drug benefit.

United Drugs and their 1,600-member pharmacies are working with CMS and other government agencies to target lower-income seniors and disabled persons who are Medicare eligible that will not be enrolled automatically into the program.

United Drugs was founded in 1976 as a cooperative of independent pharmacists in Arizona. Celebrating 30 years, the company has expanded into more than 33 states. Its early mission was to pool the purchasing power of independent pharmacists to remain competitive. Over the years, United Drugs' services have expanded to include front-end programs, insurance, central fill, pharmacy host capabilities, special buys and third-party contracting. Today, their sole mission continues to be to increase the profitability of its pharmacy members.
