Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust Protects Over A Million Mobile Patient Records With Lumension

Trust adopts centralised data protection solution to encrypt and control all data stored on mobile devices and help to improve the security culture of the organisation

London, UK (PRWEB) May 02, 2011

In order to minimise data loss and restrict malware and viruses from entering, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, a major mental health trust with over 150 sites across Lancashire, selected Lumension® Device Control. The Trust partnered with Lumension, the global leader in endpoint management and security, for its industry leading data protection solution to prevent data loss and theft by enforcing removable device usage and encryption policies for USB sticks.

The Trust, which comprises of 3,500 staff* and 9,000 Foundation Trust members* needed to ensure that its mobile teams could access data securely on the move. Although The Trust had policies in place in order to try and control data leakage, the organisation wanted to encrypt data, as well as control access to mobile devices. Lumension® Device Control was the perfect choice for The Trust as it fulfils both the device control need as well as encrypting all data on the devices.

“IT is all about getting the right data to the right place at the right time, securely. We had policies in place that tried to minimise data loss but we needed to go a step further to be able to guarantee the integrity of sensitive data stored on USB sticks. We were able to implement the Lumension® Device Control solution in less than 48 hours meaning that all data stored on USB sticks was fully encrypted as well as the access to the devices fully managed,” said Alan Boardman, IM&T technical systems manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust.

“In fact, our biggest challenge in rolling out the solution was changing corporate culture and communicating the fact that USB sticks not managed by the new technology would be denied access after a certain point in time. The implementation of this security solution has helped change the organisation’s attitude to security as well as meant that I’m now able to sleep at night knowing that if a USB device is lost, the data within is secure and inaccessible.”

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust went live with Lumension Device Control in 2010. The software prevents data loss or theft by enforcing security policies onto all mobile storage devices and enables the IT team to centrally view and control every device that connects to the Trust’s PCs, workstations or laptops. The team can also detect and address known vulnerabilities by tracking every mobile storage device that has ever connected to the network.

Lumension Device Control’s “whitelisting” technology is key to the Trust’s requirements for sustained mobility, as it allows the IT team to specify which removable storage device can be used to transport data and which cannot be connected to the network. Where additional devices are permitted, such as to enable an employee to carry out a specific task, all data transferred to or from this device may be audited by the software and a copy of the data can be created using Lumension’s patented bi-directional Shadowing Technology. Furthermore, the Trust can view an audit trail of all data that has been moved to or from removable storage media.

Commenting on the deployment, Alan Bentley, Senior VP International, Lumension said: “We are delighted to work with Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. Public sector organisations are recognising the need to ensure the integrity of data regardless of whether it is on or off site. Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust has demonstrated the value of using our technology to reinforce existing policies designed to safeguard data, by gaining control and visibility of all data transferred to portable devices.”
