SW China province vaccinates pigs to control epidemic

CHENGDU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China began to inoculate pigs Wednesday with newly-developed vaccines in sout China's Sichuan Province in an effort to prevent the spread of swine flu, according to the provincial animal husbandry bureau.

The streptococcus swine type II, produced by a company in the southern province of Guangdong and another Sichuan-based firm, will be injected on pigs in accordance to fixed schedule.

With the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture, the compulsory vaccination will start from areas without pig-borne disease cases and gradually lead to regions afflicted by the bacteria streptococcus suis, which has swept through many villages and towns, said Qu Kunning, director with the Sichuan Provincial Animal Husbandry and Food Bureau.

Pig raisers do not need to pay for the vaccination, Qu said.

Pigs will be given two injections of such vaccines within 15 days, which will promise an immunization period of above 4 months.

Piglets or week, sick and pregnant pigs are not allowed to receive the inoculation, said Li Guoan, senior researcher in the bureau.
