AMERICAN SHARED HOSPITAL SERVICES (AMEX:AMS)(PCX:AMS), the leading provider of Gamma Knife(R) radiosurgery services, announced today that its 21st Gamma Knife center, at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, began treating patients this week. This is AMS' third new Gamma Knife to go into service in 2005.

Craig K. Tagawa, Chief Operating Officer of American Shared, said, "The opening of our newest Gamma Knife center underscores Mercy's commitment to neuroscience leadership in the central southwest. The Gamma Knife, the 'radiosurgery gold standard,' provides Mercy's physicians with today's most advanced technology for treatment of patients with brain tumors, vascular malformations and trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain)."

Dr. Richard Vertrees Smith, Medical Director and Neurosurgeon at Mercy NeuroScience Institute, added, "Mercy NeuroScience Institute neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists are very pleased to have the opportunity to offer our patients the most advanced and accurate intracranial radiosurgical device, the Gamma Knife. Our neurosurgical patients understand that the non-invasive Gamma Knife now offers an alternative to open brain surgery. We have assembled an excellent treatment team of dedicated professionals to provide compassionate Mercy Gamma Knife patient care for the state of Oklahoma."

About AMS

American Shared Hospital Services is building a profitable medical services company in an underserved niche -- turnkey technology solutions for advanced radiosurgical procedures. The Company's core business is supplying hospitals with the Gamma Knife -- a non-invasive treatment for malignant and benign brain tumors, vascular malformations and trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain). The Gamma Knife, the gold standard in radiosurgery, reduces surgical risk and patient discomfort, resulting in a shorter hospital stay and lower risk of complications. In most cases, Gamma Knife patients resume their normal activities within a few days of treatment, compared to weeks or months for patients who undergo conventional surgery. More than 250,000 patients worldwide have already received this treatment. American Shared Hospital Services is the world leader in providing Gamma Knife radiosurgery services.
