Central sterile processing departments are charged with the task of cleaning and sterilizing equipment and devices that are used in all areas of the healthcare continuum, but particularly in the area of healthcare delivery, which includes surgical instrumentation. The appropriate levels of the cleanliness of surgery packs and the sterilization of the instruments in those packs is absolutely critical to the successful delivery of care and the minimization of surgical site and healthcare acquired infections (HAIs).
Most instruments are subjected to a process that addresses these issues, and the process is the guide that these departments use to determine the appropriate levels of cleanliness. For example, the instruments are engaged in a cleaning process and when the process is done the instrumentation is considered clean and appropriate for use in their respective domains. However, how does the department really know that the instruments are truly clean and disinfected to a level that should be the standard in healthcare, and how do they know that there has not been some exposure to bacteria or bioburden between the sterilization process and the preparation of the devices for surgery?
Midbrook Medical has developed a solution to that problem: The MediCount ATP Testing System. The system works on a simple premise. ATP is a chemical substance that powers reactions in cells, which includes bacteria. In essence, ATP acts as the energy currency for all cellular growth. As a corollary the presence of bacteria and/or viruses can be indirectly determined or measured by testing the levels of ATP that are present on a touch surface or device, allowing sterile processing departments to truly gage the effectiveness of their processes or spot check areas of concern. The ability of the MediCount ATP testing system to determine the presence of bacteria makes it an incredibly useful tool for identifying sources of HAIs, which continues to be a growing concern in the medical community.
The MediCount ATP testing system allows users to determine ATP levels by swabbing a surface and placing the swab into a handheld unit. The unit measures the amount of ATP on the given surface in terms of relative light units (RLUs) that essentially quantifies the amount of ATP on the surface. The lower the count, the less ATP is present and by association less living bacteria. The user may determine acceptable thresholds for any given surface, which should make the RLU measurement thresholds on instrumentation lower than for example the top of a table. This holds true facility wide. Patient room touch surfaces should have lower thresholds than common room touch surfaces.
The software that is part of the MediCount system allows the users to track all aspects and areas of the cleanliness initiative in any facility or department. The handheld unit communicates easily with the software and presents the user with verifiable, quantifiable data that can be tracked over time and allows for visual output with the use of graphs, charts and/or spreadsheets. The software also allows the users to easily program the handheld unit for individuals, departments or any methodology of tracking that the user desires, making the system a “must have” for all Central Sterile Processing Departments.
The MediCount system will allow CSPD personnel to identify and track areas of concern or simply spot check areas to determine if cleaning processes are truly working. Examples of this are spot checking surgical cart touch surfaces after they come out of the cart washer, pre-packed surgical instruments or surgical pack preparation areas. The CSPD is the first line of defense against HAIs, and the MediCount can help personnel catch possible sources of infection before they reach patients.
