19 cholera cases found in flood-hit west India
NEW DELHI, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- West India's Maharastra, heavily hit by torrential rains and floods late July, has reported 19 cholera cases with two in India's business hub Mumbai, local media reported Thursday.
Besides cholera, 352 cases of hepatitis, 30 of leptospirosis and 10 of dengue fever have also been found in the region, according to the local health authority quoted by Thursday's Asian Age.
The number of diarrhea and gastroenteritis cases also rose to 11,684, the authority said.
The areas submerged by floods after heavy rains late July were worst affected and risk of water pollution is rising as it is not possible to collect garbage, the source said.
Cholera infects people and can be spread by polluted foods and drinking water.
"We have collected water and food samples from the affected areas to find out the exact reason of the spread of disease," said Mahesh Shah, deputy dean at Nair hospital.
