June 13th Event to Call Attention to Need for Early Detection

Burnaby, BC (PRWEB) June 10, 2011

LED Dental Inc. announced today that its VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment system will be utilized at the annual Oral Cancer Awareness Screening & Education Sessions at the New Jersey State House in Trenton.  Free oral cancer screenings will be offered on Monday, June 13 to all employees who work in the State House, all 120 state legislators and their key staff, and other visitors to the building.

“This is an important event for dentistry as we get the opportunity to educate lawmakers on the facts about oral cancer and why it should be viewed as a serious threat to the mortality of many New Jerseyans,” said Eric R. Elmore, Director, Marketing Communications of the New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA). Several NJDA officials and Senator Diane Allen, a recent oral cancer survivor, have been getting the word out among the state employees about the event.

In addition to LED Dental, manufacturer of the VELscope Vx, other event supporters include Henry Schein Dental, the exclusive North American distributor of the VELscope Vx, as well as Colgate-Palmolive and the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services.

Oral cancer is one of the few types of cancer that is claiming an increased number of victims each year. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, the reason is the dramatic growth in the number of cases attributed to the sexually-transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV), which they claim has surpassed tobacco as the number one cause of the disease. As a result, one American dies of oral cancer every hour of every day, which is more than double the rate for cervical cancer. A major challenge is the fact that oral cancer is often imperceptible to patients and thus discovered in late stages, when the five-year survival rate is roughly 30%. Fortunately, when discovered in early stages, the five-year survival rate leaps to 80%-to-90%, and the degree of treatment required is much less severe.

The VELscope system is the first adjunctive device cleared by FDA to help clinicians detect cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions that might not be apparent to the naked eye, and to help determine the appropriate surgical margin when excision is indicated. The latest generation of this technology, the VELscope Vx, features a cordless design and a price less than half that of earlier generation models. VELscope Vx exams take only two minutes, are affordable for patients, and involve no rinses, dyes or discomfort of any kind.
