Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 15, 2011
In an effort to change the lives of children and adolescents diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Special Learning, Inc. has launched its new website at http://www.special-learning.com. The company’s mission is to provide solutions that positively impact the lives of every person affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder in the global market. Special Learning’s vision is to offer every parent with a diagnosed child a genuine chance to help their son or daughter attain an abundant and fulfilling life using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy. The site provides extensive information, tools and resources for anyone who works with, and whose lives are touched by, individuals on the autism spectrum.
Special Learning will also be releasing this month an iPhone App called Communicating Basic Needs. Children with delayed speech skills can use this clever app to easily communicate their basic needs to parents, consultants, teachers and others using real, colorful images of food, drinks, clothing, and toys/activities. The app also allows children to communicate their emotions and frequent daily needs. Using the underlying principles of ABA, the app can also be used as a teaching tool to help children acquire new skills; among many other features, the app also contains a data reporting function to track usage and frequency of a child’s requests for ongoing customization.
The site also offers a series of eBooks and audio books that are both informative and easy to read. Parents, teachers and providers can learn about a variety of autism and applied behavior analysis-related topics, confident that what they are reading is evidence-based and reviewed by BCBA’s for accuracy and ABA compliance. For Behavior Analysts, the site offers a subscription to Special Learning’s ABA Article Summary Newsletter. This captures and summarizes key and relevant research articles on specific topics, which allow experts to quickly and easily remain informed about current research findings.
In addition to its own line, ABA experts at Special Learning continuously identify and screen third-party products that represent best-in-class ABA-compliant teaching and educational tools. The site only carries products that may further enhance the ability of parents and providers to offer highly effective ABA Therapy to children with ASD.
Autism is quickly becoming one of the most prevalent disorders affecting children. In 2001, the National Institute of Health estimated that 1 in 250 children were affected by Autism. But according to a 2009 article in the journal Pediatrics, Autism has increased to an alarming rate of 1 in 91 children (1 in 56 for boys). Various researches estimate growth of 10 to 17% annually, which means autism is reaching epidemic proportions.
In the meantime, there is a critical shortage of evidence-based information and research-based therapeutic solutions available to families affected by ASD. Parents with recently diagnosed children face a bewildering array of choices in determining the best course of action to ensure that their children will get the best possible treatment. Furthermore, global standards for consistent delivery of autism therapy are not yet established, and the rapidly increasing number of diagnosed children is already exceeding the supply of qualified providers trained in effectively teaching critical life skills. It’s a situation that appears insurmountable to most parents.
If a parent can find trained ABA professionals to help their child develop and implement an appropriate treatment plan, it is likely to cost as much as $75,000 per year, which is well outside the reach of most families. Special Learning’s educational materials, software solutions and other tools provide parents with an alternative, cost effective option for providing their children with ABA Therapy.
To celebrate the launch of Special Learning, a $10 donation for each Autism Learning Kit sold will be made to the Special Learning ABA Education Fund to help the most deserving families access ABA training for their children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
