July 8, 2011

SAINT PAUL, Minn., July 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Today, Hunger Solutions Minnesota releases a quarterly report that measures the state of hunger in Minnesota. The most sobering statistic amoung the many hunger measurements is the fact that Minnesota witnessed a historicial increase in Food Support/Food Stamp enrollment. According to the State of Minnesota Department of Human Services and the USDA, Minnesota currently has over 515,000 individuals enrolled in the Food Support Program.

Minnesota Department of Human Services reports that there was a 30% jump in Food Support caseloads from 2008–2009 and another 20% increase from 2009-2010.. According to the USDA, Minnesota had the 6th highest one-year increase in the nation from April 2010 to April 2011 at 18.8%. New Jersey had the highest at 22.7% and North Dakota had the lowest at .6%.

Hunger Solutions Minnesota works closely with Minnesota food shelves and includes an overview of how neighborhood food shelves have served an ever-increasing demand for grocery help across the state since 2000. This includes information about food shelves that are housed in public schools.

The report contains hunger data points from reports developed for Hunger Free MN. Hunger Solutions Minnesota is a founding partner of this statewide anti-hunger coalition. The report also reviews the number of school age children at risk for hunger and the programs available to respond to the need.

Even though the numbers are high (an estimated 1 in 10) for Minnesotans that receive food help, there are still thousands that are skipping meals or making poor nutrition choices. 95% of all callers to the Minnesota Food HelpLine that were screened were eligible, but not yet enrolled, in Food Support. For those who may need help or know someone that is not eating well, Hunger Solutions Minnesota offers assistance via the Minnesota Food HelpLine.
