The introduction provided to Scott left little wonder as to why he was selected to speak to these new graduates: Master of Accounting alumnus of the College, co-founder of his first CPA firm at age 26, volunteer efforts which include serving his eighth term on the West Central Florida Board, as well as being president elect for the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA). On July 1, 2012 , Scott will become the second youngest president in the Institutes history.
Scott credited his success in business to the technical foundation he received at the University coupled with his focus on Integrity, Diligence, and Leadership; stating that those three principles helped shape his career path. He continued that after the fall of Arthur Andersen where he was employed in 2002, he decided he wanted to be in control of people’s perception of his integrity which led to him starting his own CPA firm at the age of 26. “I knew that Integrity was always going to be a cornerstone of our firm and that our employees and especially our clients knew that fact as well.
“Over the past 15 years, I have learned that while the way business is done has changed drastically, the foundation of how good business is conducted has not changed at all. While facebook, twitter, and linked in did not exist during my tenure at FSU and our IMS class included mastering LOTUS 123, business principles that existed in 1967 and 1997 still exist in 2012.”
Scott went on to add that along with integrity, exhibiting diligence is also an important attribute of a successful business person. “Diligence needs to be a fabric of your business career. There are nearly 400,000 CPAs that could provide the same product that I provide, so why do customers choose to work with me? I think it is because I have consistently shown I will not just say what I will do but I do what I say I will do. If people know that you are diligent and follow through on your actions they will continuously buy from you. Whether this is professional services or products, you will differentiate yourself from your competitors through your diligence.” Scott wrapped up his speech to the graduates with this final thought, “Again, I congratulate you on your achievements and hope with integrity, diligence, and leadership you continue your success in the business world!”
