Syracuse, New York (PRWEB) August 16, 2011

The race is on! The top contenders in the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance (@CancerAlliance) $50k to Cancer campaign have a short time left to get their votes in. The campaign, ending September 2nd was started as a way to raise funds for cancer research and support. @CancerAlliance has pledged to donate $1 for every new twitter follower gained, up to $50,000. As of now, there is over $18,500 dedicated for the winning organization.

The top three organizations: St. Jude’s hospital, Susan G. Komen, and The Jimmy Fund, the official charity of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, are separated by only 54 votes in total; and the rest are not far behind. It should be noted, however, that the leader had only received 164 total votes at the time of publishing, meaning this is still truly anyone’s game.

“Given that the campaign allows for every new follower to vote for which organization they want to receive the money, there is still time for any organization, no matter the size, to take the lead quickly,” said Jack Bleeker, a spokesman for the drive.

“I would encourage even the smallest of organizations to start generating some buzz about the campaign and to get the word out.”

Khloe Kardashian, a popular television personality whose father passed away from esophageal cancer, tweeted to her followers to follow @CancerAlliance on August 2nd. This single tweet helped the campaign to raise over $14,000 in a matter of hours. Kardashian’s husband, Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom’s own Cathy’s Kids Foundation is among the organizations in the running.

“As shown by Kardashian’s followers, one tweet targeted at the right audience can generate a substantial amount of followers,” Bleeker added.

The drive has not been confined to the pursuit of Hollywood celebrities, however. Arizona Cardinals defensive back Kerry Rhodes and musician Pete Yorn have also assisted through tweeting the organization’s message to their own followers. Larger cancer organizations, including the Emory University Winship Cancer Institute have also promoted the effort through their own social media accounts.

@CancerAlliance is among the leading internet-based social media cancer communities.

It features the latest in cancer treatment advancements, academic research, and inspirational stories of survival and triumph over the disease. In this way, the community serves as an open platform for all of those affected by cancer in some way.
