Mission Neighborhood Health Center Staff Hold Picket Today for Improvements to Patient Care, Staffing Levels at SF Clinic

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 August 2005, 15:01 CDT

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ --

When: Noon to 1:30 Tuesday, August 16, 2005 Where: Mission Neighborhood Health Center 16th and Capp, San Francisco, CA

On Tuesday, August 16th, Mission Neighborhood Health Center caregivers will picket their employer over staffing deficiencies at the clinic. Workers have been in negotiations with management for months to no avail. Caregivers are concerned about the long waits for patients at the facility, the high physician and staff turnover and the effect that under-staffing is having on patient care.

The healthcare workers who staff the facility have brought their concerns to the clinic's Board of Directors and management, yet no actions have been taken to address the problems. Mission Neighborhood Health Center has chosen instead to hire more management positions, none of whom are responsible for the direct care of patients. While MNHC has many directors and assistant directors, the clinic is continually short-staffed for RNs, Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.

"Our concern is that we have been working without a contract for about a year and a half now, and our negotiations with management are going nowhere," said medical assistant Yadira Rivera. "We are the ones who deal with the patients on the frontline every day -- we are fighting for the patients and our community, not for money, but we can't do our best job when the folks who interact with the patients are continually understaffed. There aren't enough people around to deal with all of our patients. From doctors to medical assistants on down, we are understaffed in all areas except management -- and even though management doesn't deal directly with the patients, they continue to hire more and more people to be directors and assistant directors while ignoring the direct care staffing shortages that happen every day at our clinic."
