LOOK: Health : Fit for Life: Exercise is Key to Healthy Mind

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 August 2005, 12:00 CDT

IF YOU are feeling sluggish and depressed the answer may not lie with anti-depressants and a trip to the doctor - a brisk walk or a jog could provide a far better remedy.

In fact, numerous studies show supervised exercise programmes are one of the most effective ways of beating the blues.

Research in Berlin involving a group of patients suffering from depression, showed 3 0 minutes of exercise each day had a positive effect. And unlike taking anti-depressants and other drugs, exercising has no bad side effects.

The chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, says: "Physical activity is as successful as psychotherapy or medication at beating depression, particularly in the long term."

Even if exercise is the last thing you feel like doing, push yourself and you will be amazed by the results
