In the latest example of Long Island hospitals' efforts to improve stroke treatment, St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson has been certified as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health.
The state is designating stroke centers as a way to encourage and recognize efforts to improve care for stroke patients.
Swift treatment is paramount with strokes, since the most effective medication works best for only three hours after an attack.
Dr. Michael Sauter, director of St. Charles Hospital's stroke team, said he believes his hospital's ability to provide quick diagnosis and care will result in a reduction of permanent disabilities for patients suffering a stroke and help save lives.
To win the state designation, St. Charles, a 289-bed hospital, had to establish an around-the-clock stroke team and show it had staff on site to perform and interpret CT scans, analyze laboratory data and perform neurosurgical procedures.
Strokes can be caused by clots obstructing the flow of blood to the brain or ruptured blood vessels that prevent blood flow to the brain.
