THE number of drug addicts seeking treatment in Dublin and surrounding counties has risen 23 per cent, a new report has revealed.
A Health Research Board (HRB) study showed the numbers treated for drug addiction in the capital and in Wicklow and Kildare went from 5,083 in 1998 to 6,248 in 2002.
A spokeswoman for the HRB said: "The 23 per cent increase is accounted for by the increase in cases continuing treatment and those returning to treatment."
The study also revealed more than two-thirds are addicted to more than one drug.
While the majority of those in treatment cite opiates, including heroin, as the "main drug", many have co-addictions to cocaine, cannabis and benzodiazepines.
The spokeswoman added: "Between 1998 and 2002 more than two- thirds of treated problem users used more than one drug."
The number of cases coming to the attention of local drug task forces has decreased in areas including Ballyfermot, followed by Blanchardstown and Ballymun.
