Susilo calls on localities to set up anti-drug centers

JAKARTA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Saturday called on all regions to set up their own drug abuse and trafficking prevention centers.

"If there is a drug fighting center in every region, we ( central government) will no longer need to act like a fire brigade in overcoming drug-related problems," the president was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the Kedaton Parahita Narcotic Rehabilitation Center at Bukit Sentul, Bogor district in West Java.

The President expressed hope that every region in the country could have its own anti-drug center supported by spiritual leaders, psychologists, psychiatrists, public figures and parents in a bid to stop drug abuse.

"The government will fully facilitate and motivate such efforts, " the head of state said. "The more we prevent drug abuse, the fewer the people who will become victim of the drug menace," he added.

Yudhoyono also called on all provincial governors, district heads and city mayors to participate personally in anti-drug efforts in their respective jurisdictions.

He said governors, district heads and city mayors should be actively helping drug victims recover from their addiction and have a new future.

"Please take care of their mental and spiritual health to enable them to have a new future," the President said.
