Facts on Indonesia Polio Vaccinations
August 30, 2005
POLIO INFECTIONS: One adult and 225 children have contracted polio in Indonesia since March.
VACCINATION CAMPAIGN: The archipelago nation held two vaccination rounds earlier this year; a third began Tuesday. Its aim is to reach 24 million children under age 6.
LOGISTICAL HURDLES: Rumors circulated that three children died after taking the vaccine, and some families say their children won’t take part. Delivering the vaccine is tough too: Indonesia has 6,000 inhabited islands.
