Summit Reinsurance Services Selects HMC As Provider of Disease and Maternity Management Services

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 09:01 CDT

Summit Reinsurance Services, Inc. (Summit Re), a full-service managing general underwriter and reinsurance intermediary broker that focuses exclusively on managed care, and Health Management Corporation (HMC), a leading national health and disease management company, today announced that Summit Re has selected HMC as the provider of targeted disease and maternity management services for its health plan clients. Through the use of these services, health plans can improve overall health and wellness by identifying members at increased risk for future health complications and conducting highly customized interventions.

HMC's Healthy Returns(SM) Disease Management Program is used to manage high-cost chronic conditions that have traditionally represented a large portion of medical claims. These conditions include asthma, diabetes, coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), depression, low back pain and metabolic syndrome. For health plan members diagnosed with one or more of these conditions, a primary nurse care manager is assigned to deploy an Individualized Intervention Plan(SM) (IIP) that addresses the member's primary and co-morbid conditions. The IIP outlines patient-centric interventions based on the health status of the member and the latest clinical guidelines.

HMC's Baby Benefits(R) Maternity Management Program helps reduce the incidence and severity of pre-term births and other pregnancy-related complications through early and continuous prenatal and high-risk maternity care. HMC's clinical structure consists of an assigned primary nurse care manager for each high-risk participant, supported by on-site pharmacists, registered dietitians, health educators and a medical director. Since its inception in 1989, Baby Benefits has managed hundreds of thousands of births and received numerous awards for its documented delivery of improved healthcare outcomes and cost savings.

"Offering disease and maternity management services to our clients further affirms our mission of enhancing cost savings while maintaining quality of care," said Deborah Stubbs RN, MS, CCM, managed care specialist for Summit Reinsurance Services. "We chose to work with HMC because the company is a pioneer in the disease management field, and has the experience, resources and vision needed to deliver these important services."

"Increasingly, forward-thinking health plans are focusing on early intervention to help prevent the onset of costly, chronic illness," said Jeff Odell, vice president of sales and marketing for HMC. "Summit Reinsurance Services' decision to offer its health plan clients access to services that facilitate this innovative approach underscores their commitment to meeting the expanding needs of their clients."
