Targeted Genetics Announces Issuance of Additional Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) Vector Technology Patent

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 09:01 CDT

SEATTLE, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Targeted Genetics Corporation today announced the issuance of an additional patent related to the Company's adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector technology. U.S. patent #6,936,466, titled "Transcriptionally Activated AAV Inverted Terminal Repeats (ITRs) for Use with Recombinant AAV Vectors" covers the use of small regulatory control elements in conjunction with sequences within the AAV genome to drive gene expression. The use of vectors described in the patent may help to maximize gene expression efficiency with little or no loss in viral payload.

"We believe that AAV vectors hold great promise in treating a wide variety of diseases," said H. Stewart Parker, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Targeted Genetics is pursuing several approaches, including the approach outlined in this patent, to expand the utility of AAV vectors. Utilizing sequences contained within the AAV genome to drive expression increases our flexibility with respect to vector design, which may allow us to deliver genes that might not ordinarily fit into a single AAV vector. Targeted Genetics continues to broaden its intellectual property portfolio in the area of AAV vector technology, further solidifying its leadership position in this important field of gene delivery."

The combined attributes of persistent expression and a good safety profile make AAV vectors the vector of choice for gene-transfer treatment for a wide variety of chronic disease and the development of viral vaccines. The patent issued today in conjunction with our recently issued patents covering additional methodologies whereby we can increase the carrying capacity of AAV vectors, or produce vectors of a smaller size which lead to metabolically activated recombinant vectors, provides Targeted Genetics with a broad platform of technologies with which to design vectors suitable either to the disease or condition being treated or the genetic sequence being delivered as the therapeutic.
