CHA Releases Findings of Inaugural Survey of Drug Development Activities in Emerging Regions By Western Biopharmaceutical Companies

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 15:01 CDT

WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Cambridge Healthtech Advisors (CHA) today released the findings of a comprehensive survey demonstrating the significant role of Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America in the drug development activities of western pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. According to this survey, currently two-thirds of U.S. and Western European biopharmaceutical companies conduct drug development activities in these emerging regions and over 30% of development projects will occur in these regions by 2008.

Survey participants included 235 individuals from U.S. and Western European drug development companies. Thirty-two of the top fifty pharmaceutical companies are represented in the survey results. In total, respondents from 157 therapeutic companies participated in this survey.

According to the survey, more companies have established drug development activities in India than in any other emerging country. Among the top-50 pharmaceutical companies, more than three-quarters are conducting drug development projects in India.

The survey also finds that western biopharmaceutical companies today generally avoid conducting sensitive drug development activities that require a high degree of skill or experience in developing regions. This is expected to change substantially, however, over the next three years. Today, less than 40% of the companies surveyed conduct GLP preclinical studies in emerging regions, representing less than 10% of all such projects. By 2008, however, those same companies plan to more than triple the number of such projects done in emerging regions.

"Clearly many companies understand that maintaining leadership involves embracing the dynamism and opportunities in these emerging regions," said Eugene Williams, CEO of Cambridge Healthtech Advisors. "Leading companies have long realized that to make important contributions in medicine they need to look outside their four walls. That now means tapping the talent and innovation in places like India, Eastern Europe, and China where scientific capabilities are rapidly advancing. Moreover, a presence in these countries, will both open markets and enable western companies to deploy their existing, highly skilled and talented scientists to develop therapies for patient populations they have long ignored but will now consider economically attractive."
