State of Emergency in Primorye Over Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 21:00 CDT

VLADIVOSTOK. Aug 30 (Interfax) - A state of emergency has been declared in the Spassk district in Primorye territory where an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been reported.

Quarantine has been introduced in the villages of Krasny Kut, Vishnyovka and Yevseyevka, the press service of the Far East branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax. People and cargoes can enter or exit the villages only if they have permission from the Spassk district's chief veterinarian.

All by-passing roads have been closed to traffic and the sale of meat products has been banned in the district.

Forty-six foot-and-mouth disease cases have been reported among cattle in the village of Krasny Kut, and suspected cases of the disease have been registered in another three Primorye districts, where cattle are being vaccinated.

As many as "150,000 doses of a vaccine against the Asia-1 foot- and-mouth disease virus are already available in Primorye. Another 160,000 doses are expected to be delivered within the next few days. This amount will be enough to vaccinate cattle that belong both to major and private farms," Alexander Tabachenko, chief of the territory administration's agriculture and procurement department, said at a telecom conference on Tuesday.
