Michigan Supreme Court Refusal to Hear Case Clears Way for St. John Health

NOVI, Mich., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Michigan Supreme Court decided not to hear the plaintiff's case against St. John Health building a hospital in Novi. This is consistent with the court of appeals 2005 decision upholding the constitutionality of St. John Health's move to transfer beds to its Novi facility.
St. John Health continues to move forward with construction of a hospital in Novi bringing much needed inpatient capabilities to the western Oakland County area. The planned 200-bed hospital facility will be constructed at Grand River Avenue and Beck Roads, adjacent to the existing medical facility and the Assarian Cancer Center.
"The state Supreme Court's decision to not hear the plaintiff's case is a victory for our patients, because it reaffirms our position that there is a definite need for access to inpatient medical care in the rapidly growing western suburbs," said Elliot Joseph, CEO of St. John Health. "This is a real victory for our ability to fulfill our mission of providing care to all of our communities, and to sustain the financial viability we need to serve the poor and vulnerable."
Currently, Providence Park Hospital in Novi is a multi-faceted campus offering a comprehensive array of outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic services, 24-hour emergency care center, a cancer center and more than 35 physician offices.
Major construction of the $224 million hospital facility began in the summer of 2005. Construction plans include an expanded emergency department and state-of-the art imaging technology, inpatient and outpatient pediatric services, a dedicated pediatric unit and pediatric short stay unit, a Neuroscience Institute, a Musculoskeletal Center of Excellence, as well as a dedicated and consolidated Women's Services area.
In addition to the hospital itself, the existing campus is being developed with additional outside investments of approximately $100 million from area developers, business leaders and physicians. These additional investments will bring a large Fitness and Wellness Center, hotel services and a new medical office building to the Novi campus.
"For many years we have worked to provide inpatient care to western Oakland County," said Robert Casalou, president, Providence Hospital and Medical Centers. "Today I am thrilled for our patients, and the quality of inpatient care that they will receive at our new hospital."
St. John Health is a network of community-based hospitals and health care services in Southeast Michigan and one of the largest employers in metro Detroit.
