President Bush Declares September As National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Posted on: Thursday, 1 September 2005, 12:00 CDT
WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- This week, President Bush released an important proclamation recognizing the significant threat of ovarian cancer, and recommending measures to increase awareness among women nationwide.
In the proclamation, President Bush calls upon "government officials, business communities, health care professionals, educators, volunteers and all people of the United States to continue our nation's strong commitment to preventing and treating ovarian cancer."
With 22,200 women diagnosed in 2005 with ovarian cancer, and an estimated 16,200 deaths this year due to the disease, President Bush has declared September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
"Early detection is essential to the successful treatment of ovarian cancer. The 5-year survival rate is higher than 90 percent for ovarian cancer patients whose disease is caught during the first stage of development," the proclamation continues. "Most ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, however, because no reliable screening test exists for the disease. Because the early signs of ovarian cancer are easy to miss and often resemble the signs of other conditions, it is important for women to talk with their doctors about detection and be aware of the risk factors and symptoms of this cancer."
To help increase awareness of the disease, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance has just launched a major national advertising campaign in partnership with the National Ovarian Cancer Alliance in Canada. Entitled "Turn Up the Volume," the campaign encourages women to talk about ovarian cancer symptoms and treatment with their friends, relatives, doctors and policy makers. The campaign's objective is to increase overall awareness of the disease to promote earlier detection -- and save lives.
The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is a survivor-led umbrella organization that strives to unite ovarian cancer activists, women's health advocates and health professionals in a national movement to conquer ovarian cancer. The Alliance directs efforts to increase public and professional understanding of ovarian cancer and to advocate for more effective diagnostics, treatments and a cure.
