Deaf Woman Says Hospital Ignored Her Request for Aid

Posted on: Thursday, 1 September 2005, 18:01 CDT

A deaf woman sued a hospital Wednesday, alleging that most of her requests for a sign-language interpreter when she was giving birth to her daughter in December 2003 were ignored.

The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit alleges that Lisa Monique Webb of Los Angeles repeatedly asked St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood to provide a qualified sign-language interpreter during her labor, delivery by C-section and recovery.

"The hospital ignored the vast majority of those requests," the 10-page complaint alleges. "In so doing, the hospital and the healthcare system of which it forms a part violated California's civil right statutes prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities and added to the stress of Webb's childbirth."

Hospital officials could not be reached for immediate comment on the lawsuit that names the hospital and its parent company, Daughters of Charity Health System.

Webb is seeking more than $25,000 in damages and a permanent injunction ordering the hospital to alter its "policies, practices and procedures, including employee training, to ensure that they afford full and equal enjoyment of their benefits and services for people with disabilities, and provide effective communication to people with disabilities."
