Medical Services Are Available in Northwest Florida for Evacuees

Posted on: Friday, 2 September 2005, 18:00 CDT

Sep. 2--The Okaloosa County Health Department offers services for evacuees, particularly sick children. Call the Fort Walton Beach location at 833-9249 or Crestview at 689-7808 for clinic hours for walk-in services and immunizations.

Also, evacuees who need prescription refills of lifesaving medication, or medication for chronic conditions, can go to any pharmacy for an emergency 30-day supply.

Hurricane victims do not need to have the written prescription or pharmacy-issued bottle, although that is helpful. Pharmacists and hospital staff may use their judgment in providing emergency refills.

Under Florida law, insurance companies are required to cover the cost of the emergency refill, regardless of whether a prescription was filled shortly before Hurricane Katrina struck.

Evacuees in need of assistance in getting limited refills can contact Sharing and Caring of Okaloosa County at 682-1134 or 729-3600 or Catholic Charities at 244-2825 or 243-3959.
