Stem Cell Tissue Op in 4 Years

Posted on: Tuesday, 6 September 2005, 06:00 CDT

HUMAN tissue grown from stem cells should be available for transplant in the next four years.

An ambitious pounds 17million project aims to develop the technology to target heart failure, diabetes, chronic ulcers and degenerative diseases.

Scientists believe stem cells can be used as a "repair kit" for the body by generating healthy tissue to replace that damaged by disease or injury.

Led by researchers from the University of Liverpool and funded by the European Commission, the project will bring together 23 academic and industrial partners.

Prof David Williams, of the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering at Liverpool University, said: "The science is nearly there but we have to find a reliable way of doing it."
