Urgent-Care Clinic Will Open in Downtown Milwaukee

Sep. 8--Eyeing the growing number of people living in downtown Milwaukee, Columbia St. Mary's plans to open an urgent-care clinic at 732 N. Jackson St. in mid-November.
The clinic, the first downtown, will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and part of Saturday.
Its services will include urgent care, occupational medicine and X-ray.
"People who live downtown don't have anywhere to access these services within a mile of where they live," said Kevin Behl, executive director of Madison Medical Affiliates, which will staff the clinic with help from doctors employed directly by Columbia St. Mary's.
Madison Medica Affiliates is owned by Columbia St. Mary's but contracts with about 20 doctors. The practice's offices are at 788 N. Jefferson.
Urgent care clinics do not require an appointment and are designed for minor injuries and illnesses. They are billed as a low-cost alternative to emergency room care.
The clinic, Behl said, is likely to see a fair number of sore throats, sprained ankles as well as minor work injuries.
The 10,000-square-foot clinic also will offer physical therapy by appointment.
"That's something we've identified that people in downtown will be very interested in," Behl said.
Columbia St. Mary's also hopes that the clinic's location helps its occupation medicine business.
The two closest hospitals to the downtown area are Aurora Sinai Medical Center, which is on the edge of the downtown's core, and the former St. Mary's Hospital, which is south of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Columbia St. Mary's hospitals include the former Columbia and St. Mary's hospitals in Milwaukee as well as the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Institute. The health-care system also owns a hospital in Ozaukee, part of Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin and 27 primary care clinics.
The non-profit health care system had net income of $49.5 million on revenue of $552 million in its fiscal year ended June 30, 2004, according to its most recent audited financial statement.
