VERISPAN AWARDED CONTRACT TO PROVIDE DATA TO U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
Verispan today announced it has entered a multiyear contract with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to provide the agency with projected prescription activity and longitudinal patient data in an integrated platform that will be used to monitor trends in the pharmaceutical industry. This marks the first time FDA personnel have access to such data in one system.
Verispan is providing the FDA with real-time access to commercially available longitudinal data. Additionally, Verispan supplies historical, national-level counts of dispensed prescriptions over time. This information is being provided in the following two services:
-- Vector One(TM): National - Verispan's prescription and patient tracking service providing a comprehensive overview of the national performance of all prescription drugs dispensed by retail pharmacies.
-- Vector One(TM): Total Patient Tracker - The first and only service that specifically projects the distinct number of unique patients taking multiple therapies over time.
Verispan is providing FDA personnel with access to a data-extract tool to conduct in-depth analyses of trends shown in the data. Also, the FDA has engaged with Verispan to build a syndicated tool specifically designed to evaluate and report concomitancy across all markets and brands. Development on this initiative is scheduled to begin immediately.
The information and data provided by Verispan will assist the FDA with:
-- Characterizing the duration of exposure to prescription drugs at a de-identified patient level and examining concomitant use of multiple drugs over the same time period
-- Describing national patterns of outpatient drug utilization
-- Assisting in the development of epidemiological drug safety studies
"This alliance represents all that Verispan strives for--to be the partner of choice for key organizations that advance the measurement of healthcare markets," said Peter Bird, Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Product Management for Verispan. "We are excited to be able to serve the FDA--and ultimately the public and pharmaceutical industry--by providing timely, integrated prescription and patient-centric data."
Verispan has been providing these services to the FDA since July 29, 2005.
