Sep. 13--Shawnee Mission Medical Center is one of nation's 100 best places to work if you're a working mother, according to the October issue of Working Mother magazine.
On its Web site, www.working mother.com, the magazine cites Shawnee Mission's "enviable alternative work arrangements" and flexible child-care options.
"Most of Shawnee Mission Medical Center's nurses rely on flexible hours, sharing or switching shifts and working extended days to get a shorter week," said the magazine, which also noted the hospital's on-site day-care center for children aged six weeks to 12 years.
The magazine said 83 percent of Shawnee Mission's approximately 2,800 employees -- and 70 percent of its manager -- are women.
"The medical center really fosters a family-friendly environment," the magazine said. "Staffers' children parade through its halls all year long, and Shawnee Mission Medical Center sponsors everything from Strawberry and Autumn Festivals and Family Fun Fests to spaghetti dinners."
"I am thrilled that Shawnee Mission Medical Center has been recognized as one of the country's leaders in offering programs that assist our associates in obtaining a balance between work and family life," Samuel H. Turner Sr., the hospital's president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.
To apply for the recognition, Shawnee Mission provided Working Mother with information about issues such as child-care, flexibility, parental leave, women's advancement and family-friendly programs.
The list began 20 years ago as the Working Mother 30 Best Companies.
"We have been measuring companies, holding them accountable and asking them to improve every year for two decades," the magazine said on its Web site. "We are thrilled at the progress that's been made, but there is still much to be done."
