China attaches great importance to plant nutrition study

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — The Chinese government will continue to attach great importance to plant nutrition research and relevant technology popularization and application, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu here Thursday.

Hui made the remark when addressing the 15th International Plant Nutrition Colloquium.

Plant nutrition science is vital for the safeguarding of food security, protection of the environment and the harmonious development of humans and nature, Hui said.

As China is a developing country with 1.3 billion people, it’s of great importance for the country to solve its agricultural problems, he said.

After 20 years of constant effort, China’s overall capacity of agricultural production has been lifted up remarkably. With less than 10 percent of the world’s farmland, China is providing adequate food and clothing for one fifth of of the world’s population, he said.

During the process, agricultural technology, especially plant nutrition science, have played an important role in bolstering China’s agricultural development, he said.

China will continue to introduce advanced plant nutrition technology from other parts of the world, so as to make an efficient use of water, fertilizer and land and promote the sustainable agricultural development, he said.

Over 1,000 delegates from 60 countries and regions attended the colloquium, the theme of which was plant nutrition’s role in food security, human health and environmental protection.
