Charleston Doctor Ordered to Take Courses

Posted on: Saturday, 17 September 2005, 00:00 CDT

A Charleston doctor has been ordered to take courses in controlled substance management and record keeping by the West Virginia Board of Medicine after some patients complained that he improperly told them how to take their medications.

Dr. Iraj Derakhshan has agreed to stop advising patients to cut time-released medications in half with a pill cutter. He also agreed to reduce the number of patients he treats to no more than 25 in a 24-hour period.

The complaints against Dr. Derakhshan were received in October 2002 and March 2003. He denied that his instructions posed any danger to the patients.

The board has also reprimanded a Ranger doctor for unprofessional and unethical conduct for smoking marijuana.

Dr. Walter Everett Dial entered a plea of guilty in Cabell County Magistrate Court last year to the misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. He contends he was ill and used the drug to alleviate nausea and vomiting.

He has been ordered by the board to submit to random drug tests for two years at his own expense and to refrain from further drug use.
