Dear Rachael: Health CHECK: I Need Fibre but Detest Wholemeal
Posted on: Sunday, 18 September 2005, 09:00 CDT
Q I'VE been told I need more fibre in my diet but I hate things like wholemeal bread and brown rice.
Can't I just take fibre tablets from the health food shop?
Penny
A AFRAID not. Foods like wholemeal bread, muesli, porridge and brown rice also contain a range of nutrients as well as the fibre needed to protect you from constipation, raised cholesterol and bowel cancer.
Uncooked bran in pill form can interfere with the way your body absorbs vital nutrients - and give you terrible wind!Parkinson's worry at 29
Q MY hands have started to shake, especially when I'm writing or pouring a drink. My grandad had Parkinson's disease and I'm starting to worry that I'm developing it too. But I'm only 29.
Calum
A PARKINSON'S disease is not thought to be hereditary and it would be very unusual for someone your age to have developed it.
The tremor associated with Parkinson's is usually much worse when you're resting too. Your shaking could be due to too much coffee, medication side effects or an overactive thyroid. Talk it over with your GP.My elbow's so swollenQI'VE developed a large swelling on the end of my elbow. It's not painful but feels odd - as if it is full of water. What could have caused it?
Hilary
A IT sounds like olecranon bursitis. At the end of the elbow is a fluid-filled sac or "bursa" which acts as a shock absorber.
If it is put under pressure it can become enlarged and inflamed. Avoid leaning on it and try an anti-inflammatory tablet like ibuprofen plus an ice pack.
