CIGNA Healthcare Depression Management Program Integrates Pharmacy, Behavioral and Medical Experts and Data

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., Sept. 19, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 20 million Americans each year. Causes are varied and can include chemical imbalance in the brain, a life crisis or traumatic event, stress, or concerns about chronic medical concerns such as diabetes or heart disease. At the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT "On Depression" symposium today, leading experts gathered to discuss research and methods to improve treatment protocols for this complex condition.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, diabetes doubles the rate of depression, particularly as the disease progresses. Persons with diabetes who also suffer from depression have poorer glycemic control, less adherence to treatment regimens and have 86 percent higher total health costs.
