Women's Health Specialists to Discuss Menopause and Healthy Aging - NAMS Convenes 16th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California
Posted on: Monday, 19 September 2005, 09:00 CDT
On Sept. 28 - Oct. 1, leading authorities on menopause will gather in San Diego to present the latest scientific findings in the field to healthcare professionals at the 2005 Annual Meeting of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS). This four-day meeting will facilitate discussion on how the results of these studies can be put into practice when attendees return home. The meeting experience will undoubtedly lead to improved health and quality of life for women through menopause and the years that follow, announced NAMS today.
The Keynote Address - "It's Not Your Grandmother's Aging" - will be presented by one of the world's most noted menopause experts, Lila E. Nachtigall, MD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine. She will discuss the impact that lifestyle and genetics have on healthy aging and the significant role menopause plays in the process.
NAMS will hold a Postgraduate Course, "Postmenopausal Sexual Health: A Practical, Clinical Review" on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 8:00 AM, prior to its 16th Annual Meeting. The session will offer the latest research and practical clinical recommendations, including a review of the pathophysiology of postmenopausal sexual disorders, appropriate workup strategies, current therapeutic options, and ways to integrate sexual medicine into clinical practice.
This Annual Meeting marks the 16th year that the nonprofit organization has offered a unique forum for women's healthcare providers from multiple disciplines to come to together to share research findings.
The meeting will feature numerous timely topics, including:
-- Emerging treatments for vasomotor symptoms and osteoporosis
-- The effects of menopause on aging and sleep
-- Tailoring and measuring hormone therapy
-- Postmenopausal cognitive decline
-- Vulvodynia and sexual pain disorders
-- Predicting postmenopausal fracture risk
-- Preventing cardiovascular disease
-- Preserving ovarian function and pregnancy potential
-- Antiaging strategies
One of the new components of this year's meeting is a panel discussion on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1:30 PM in which meeting attendees and media alike are invited to challenge the experts with questions regarding menopause therapies. Included on the eight-person panel will be the NAMS current President, Bruce Kessel, MD, and founding President and NAMS Executive Director, Wulf H. Utian, MD, PhD. "This session, scheduled at the end of the meeting, allows everyone to have their remaining questions addressed and enables us to have an excellent dialogue about menopause therapies," commented Dr. Utian.
In conjunction with the meeting, NAMS will offer all qualified licensed healthcare providers the opportunity to become a credential NAMS Menopause Practitioner, by sitting for the competency examination on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 2:00 PM. NAMS recognizes the need to set essential standards for health providers, thereby assuring high quality care for women.
"The benefits of the NAMS credentialing program is two-fold," said Dr. Utian. "It's an opportunity for licensed healthcare providers from multiple disciplines to demonstrate their expertise. And equally, important, it assists women in locating physicians and other healthcare providers with a special interest in menopause," he added. Those who pass are awarded the credential for three years.
The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), founded in 1989, is the world's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the health and quality of life of women through an understanding of menopause.
