Drug Delivery Implants Well-Positioned for Growth in Cancer, Pain Management

Posted on: Monday, 19 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

Drug delivery implants are increasingly being recognized as useful drug delivery systems that can provide greater assurance of patient compliance and better therapeutic outcomes than conventional drug therapies, particularly for chronic medication. Interest in implants has increased as current-generation devices have demonstrated their durability, reliability and biocompatibility. As healthcare strategists seek reliable ways to treat an increasingly aging, fragile and forgetful population, the allure of implants will continue to grow.

The market for implants will be driven by the need for improved patient compliance in the treatment of chronic conditions, and evolving advances in synthetic materials and implant design. "The current generation of drug delivery implants, consisting primarily of rigid geometric structures and polymer-based systems that release drugs continuously over extended periods of time, will be joined by future devices that will incorporate micro and nanostructures," explains George Perros, Greystone Associates Managing Director. These new devices hold the promise of such capabilities as variable rate delivery and physical and/or biological activation. "We expect drug delivery implants to expand into new therapeutic areas as drug companies search for ways to extend patent protection for existing drugs," adds Perros.

These findings are contained in a new and comprehensive report, Drug Delivery Implants: Therapies, Technology, and Opportunities. The growth of implants will be driven by a number of factors, including patient demographics and innovative technology solutions that address recognized needs in chronic disease therapeutics.
