MILLWOOD, Va., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Project HOPE congratulates Dr. Renslow Sherer, Director, HIV/AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Infections Programs, on a remarkable recognition by his peers. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) has selected, from its membership of 12,800, just 50 individuals to be conferred honorary lifetime memberships. Dr. Sherer is one of the 24 Americans selected for this honor.

"This recognition of Dr. Sherer reflects so well his commitment to the best HIV/AIDS education in all corners of the world," said John P. Howe, III, M.D., President and CEO of Project HOPE. "It brings international attention to the work of Project HOPE in combating some of the most challenging of infectious diseases."

Dr. Sherer has been a primary caregiver for persons with HIV disease since 1982. He has been a leader in Chicago in HIV prevention, care, research, training, and health policy. He has extensive experience and expertise in HIV prevention, primary care, and in model care programs for women, chemical dependency, and the medically indigent. He has been active in HIV clinical research and in the design and implementation of clinical trials, in HIV prevention programs, and in local and federal policy on HIV disease. He has numerous national and international publications and presentations on the clinical and social impact of the HIV pandemic. He led the clinical team that designed the CORE Center, a model ambulatory facility for HIV and related infectious diseases that opened in Chicago in October, 1998.

He has a long-standing commitment to training and education in HIV care and prevention, and to quality improvement. Dr. Sherer has been a member of the HHS Guideline Panel on the Use of Antiretroviral Agents since its inception. In September, 2003, Dr. Sherer joined the Section of Infectious Disease at the University of Chicago Hospitals to continue the direct care of persons living with HIV (PLWHIV). He also joined Project HOPE in Millwood, Virginia, to devote the majority of his time to international HIV care and prevention. Since that time he has led initiatives to promote community care and support of PLWHIV and orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, he has led health worker trainings in China, northern Africa, and Eastern Europe, and he has been provided guidance and technical assistance to HIV prevention efforts around the world.
