Nobel Biocare to Build Dental Bridges in Mahwah, N.J.

Sep. 21--MAHWAH -- Nobel Biocare said Tuesday that it will start producing its Procera ceramic dental bridge -- previously produced only in Sweden -- at its Mahwah plant.
The European company, which makes crowns, bridges, and dental implants, opened the Mahwah plant earlier this year.
The 40-year-old company employs about 40 workers at the Mahwah plant, which replaced a factory in Fair Lawn.
It was not clear Tuesday whether the company would hire more workers in Mahwah to make the bridges.
Demand for the company's products has increased as patients' interest in cosmetic dentistry has grown, the company said.
Nobel Biocare has about 1,550 employees worldwide. Last year, it had revenues of $482 million.
Although many manufacturers have scaled back or ended operations in the Northeast, Nobel has expanded in North Jersey because it wants to be close to East Coast dentists. That way, its products can be delivered quickly, and dentists and dental lab technicians don't have to travel far to be trained in the use of its products.
The company's products are created in a highly automated process.
Lab technicians e-mail orders with information about patients' teeth. Soon after, the mostly robotic production process begins, and crowns can be delivered in as little as 24 hours, according to the company.
